Prof Willy Zwaenepoel

Prof Willy
Zwaenepoel was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University
of Sydney in 2018.
Before
that, he was a professor of computer science and electrical engineering at Rice
University from 1984 to 2003, a professor of computer science at EPFL from 2003
to 2018, and Head of the School of Computer and Communication Sciences at EPFL
from 2003 to 2011. He has also held visiting positions at the University of
Technology Sydney, INRIA Rocquencourt, ETH Zurich, NUS and Stanford University.
He
received the BS/MS from Ghent University in 1979, and the MS and PhD from
Stanford University in 1980 and 1984, respectively.
He
is a Fellow of the IEEE and a Fellow of the ACM, a member of the Academia
Europeae, a foreign member of the Belgian Academy of Technical Sciences, and a
Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technical Sciences and Engineering.
He
is primarily known for his work in operating systems and distributed systems.
Besides his academic work, he has been involved in a number of startup
companies, most notably in Nutanix (Nasdaq:NTNX). Other startup ventures
include iMimic (acquired by Ironport/Cisco) and BugBuster (acquired by
AppDynamics/Cisco).
