The School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) prides itself as a major materials science and engineering institution in Singapore and beyond, with a strong team of 130 faculty and staff, and a student population of 1,250.
The School, comprising the Division of Materials Science and Division of Materials Technology, has rapidly evolved into a hub of excellence for teaching and research over the last few years. Within a vibrant and nurturing environment for learning and R&D collaboration, students receive an integrated science-driven and application-oriented engineering education at MSE. They are well trained in characterisation competency skills and are knowledgeable in all aspects of materials for cutting edge technologies. The School’s strong links with top research collaborators have created ample overseas attachment opportunities for students to widen their intellectual horizons.
Apart from teaching, faculty members collaborate actively with leading institutions like University of California at Los Angeles, Stanford University, Northwestern University, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Mayo Clinic and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The School’s proven expertise in biomedical devices and nanotechnology has led to research breakthroughs like the world’s first completely-dissolving heart stent and a revolutionary method of cataract removal. These research achievements have gained international recognition and attracted multimillion dollar research funding, both locally and overseas.
Students at MSE are inspired to develop their passion for and excel in research and innovation. They actively participated in and have won awards at the Young Inventors Awards, European Materials Research Society’s Graduate Student Award and Young Persons’ World Lecture Competition. A group of PhD students competed against more than 70 teams from 30 countries worldwide and emerged among the top 10 at the Nanochallenge – International Business Plan Competition while another MSE student, Ms Eileen Fong was placed among the world’s top 10 female inventors at the Global Women Inventors and Innovators Award. |
