College of Engineering

DEAN’S MESSAGE

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the website of Nanyang Engineering, the College of Engineering of NTU. This is one of the largest engineering colleges in the world consisting of six schools, 16,000 students, 600 faculty and 1,200 staff. We are proud of our diverse and multi-disciplinary faculty who have helped Nanyang Engineering to attain its current standing in the world.

Last year, the University convened a high-level Blue Ribbon Commission to review the underlying philosophy of our undergraduate education. The Commission has made a number of critical recommendations which we will be implementing progressively, with effect from academic year 2009. These will further enhance our philosophy of holistic, broad-based education and will provide the extra edge to our graduates to succeed in the global marketplace.

We believe that good research is fundamental to a good university and thus have invested heavily in high quality faculty and infrastructure. In the same light, quality graduate education is also vital for the sustenance of our research endeavours, and we will be taking steps to enhance this aspect of our activities. We constantly review our strategic programs and directions so as to position ourselves to reach the next level of research excellence.

The success of our faculty in garnering research grants continues to improve, demonstrating our competency as a research intensive institution. I am particularly gratified to note that our faculty had secured four out of the five prestigious Competitive Research Program (CRP) awards won by the University from the National Research Foundation in these two years.

We reinforced our leadership position in environment and water technologies (EWT) with the launch of the Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute (NEWRI) in early 2008. The Institute unifies the EWT research efforts in NTU and serves as a one-stop centre for industry and research partners to access our EWT capabilities. We believe NEWRI will play a critical role in realizing Singapore’s vision to be a Global Hydro-Hub by 2015.

Together with a working environment that supports and rewards good research, a world-class system is in place that attracts good researchers and students to Nanyang Engineering. At the same time, I cannot under-estimate the value of our international strategic alliances that have led us to the present enviable position in such a short time span.

Our past investments and hard work has also consolidated the University’s 26th position among the technology universities worldwide as reported in 2008 by the Times Higher Education Supplement.

May I invite you to explore Nanyang Engineering and its six schools, both in the cyberspace and the real world. Visit the links at this website to learn more about the programs and research in the schools. We will be glad to answer any of your queries.
