Minor in Energy Programme

​The Minor in Energy is open to all NTU students who wish to gain an understanding of the various aspects of energy and its effects and challenges on society, as well as alternative and potential energy sources for sustainable development. 
  
Students are encouraged to take MA9001 Introduction to Energy to equip themselves with the fundamentals of energy. The course is designed to provide an overview of energy with regard to its availability, affordability, sustainability and impact on the environment, equipping students with the foundation to pursue a more in-depth study of other topics in energy.
  
Students are required to complete at least 5 courses, or 15AU, to be awarded a Minor in Energy.

Course Outline

MA9001 – Introduction to Energy

This course will give an overview of the energy scenario with respect to demand, availability, and environmental concerns, followed by description of the electricity system. There will be an introduction to each energy source, covering both conventional and renewable sources. The challenges in energy storage and conversion will be examined. Lastly, efficient energy utilisation and energy conservation will be discussed.

EE8085 – Electrification For The Built Environment

The course will provide an overview of the generation and distribution of electricity, and how electricity usage impacts modern society. Essential aspects of power system technology, electricity utilisation and recent developments on electricity industry restructuring would be discussed. Topics include: Conventional sources of electricity generation, transmission and distribution systems, clean/green power and renewable sources, liberalisation of electricity industry and energy procurement, electricity utilisation and quality, energy conservation and safety.

EE8093 – Energy Devices for Sustainable Urban Environment

Sustainability problems of urban environments will be discussed with focus on issues related to energy. The types of renewable energy sources will be introduced, followed by the principles and applications of energy conversion devices namely crystalline solar cells, thin film solar cells and thermoelectric devices. Supercapacitors and batteries will be discussed in the final part of the course on energy storage. The applications of these energy devices will be illustrated through specific case studies. 

EM9105 – Energy Resources Management

This introductory course will provide an overview of energy resources management in the context of sustainable economic development. Topics include energy and human society, energy resources and reserves, supply, distribution, utilisation, recovery and conversion, environmental impacts of energy utilisation, energy economics and policies.

HE3010 – Energy Economics

This course studies how energy resources, for instance, exhaustible resources such as fossil fuels and nuclear energy, renewable energy resources such as biofuel, solar, wind, tidal, wave and geothermal energy, and a secondary energy resource such as electricity, are produced, allocated and consumed in the economy, and examines how energy consumption and production contribute to economic growth.

CE/CZ0002 – Green Computing

This course is designed to introduce students to the role and contributions of Information Technology towards a sustainable and eco-friendly environment. Green computing, or green IT, is the design and engineering of environmentally sustainable hardware and software. It will cover activities spanning the design, manufacture, use, and disposal of computers, servers, and associated subsystems to exploiting IT to make the world more energy efficient. This course will endow students with a basic knowledge of the latest in green initiatives that span the entire IT lifecycle so that students are aware of the trends, impacts and contributions of IT towards an energy-efficient and carbon-friendly global economy.

MS8205 – Materials for Energy Conversion

This course will give an introduction to materials and fuels for conventional energy technology. The efficiency of existing technologies, as well as materials for renewable energy generation will be covered. In the final part of the course, materials conservation, recycling and sustainable use will be discussed.
