Engineering with a Second Major in Business

PROGRAMME OPTIONS

Students can choose from 11 Engineering majors and 6 Business tracks in Accounting, Business Analytics, Finance, International Trading, Marketing and Operations Management, according to their interests and strengths.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The structure of the Bachelor of Engineering with a Second Major in Business programme integrates the requirements of both the Engineering and Business majors within the typical candidature of 4 years. The Year 1 curriculum incorporates Business foundation courses along with Engineering major courses. From Year 2, the Business major component branches into 6 advanced business tracks and students will be streamed via a combination of student option and academic performance.

Streaming

Students will go through a streaming exercise at the end of Year 1 Semester 2 to select their tracks. Streaming will be based on students’ choice and fulfillment of the entry criteria for each track set out in Table 3.  Note that streaming criteria is subject to review according to the demand and availability of places in each track.

Business Major Tracks

1)   Accounting (ACC)

The Accounting track will equip you with a good understanding of the financial, legal and taxation regimes within which companies operate. You will learn to interpret, analyse and use financial statements of companies for both internal and external decision making purposes. Additionally, selected courses in the Accounting track will qualify you for course waivers in NBS’ postgraduate Masters in Accountancy programme, which serves as a gateway for non-accounting graduates to enrol in the Singapore Qualification Programme to qualify as Chartered Accountants of Singapore.

As Singapore thrives as a regional and global financial centre, professionals with financial knowledge and skills will be highly valued and in great demand. The Finance track provides you with financial training and knowledge to understand and keep pace with the constantly evolving financial sector.

3)   Business Analytics (BA)
 
The modern organisation has scores of data that are often under-utilised for business planning and market research opportunities. The Business Analytics track equips you with the business and analytical skills to investigate business data for developing innovative business insights and solutions. This programme complements your engineering knowledge by leveraging on your technical training and prepares you for fulfilling careers such as in the area of business consulting.

4)   International Trading (ITP)

Singapore is the largest physical commodities trading hub in Asia and home to more than 400 global trading companies that have anchored their strategic global or regional functions here. With a bustling ecosystem of offshore traders and supporting industries, it is estimated that Singapore will need to grow the specialised talent pool for the trading sector by approximately 500 per year to ensure a healthy pipeline of talent to fuel and sustain the continued growth of the sector. The International Trading Programme will prepare you for attractive careers in the lucrative commodity trading sector and value chain.

5)   Marketing (MKG)
  

The Marketing track adopts a strong global perspective and real-world orientation, providing you with exposure to a variety of marketing functions including brand and product management, trade marketing, advertising and marketing research. Build a strong foundation in market analysis, planning and decision-making techniques as well as consumer and business behaviour theories relevant to modern marketing practice.

6)   Operations Management (OM)
  

Be equipped with the necessary skill sets and competencies to manage a company’s business operations and supply chains more efficiently and effectively. Coupled with engineering knowledge and technical know-how, you will develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of both the technical and operational aspects of any industry in the international business environment.

GRADUATION  

Graduates of the Engineering with a Second Major in Business programme will be awarded a Bachelor of Engineering in their chosen Engineering major with a separate certificate for the second major in Business.

Additionally, graduates of the ITP track will receive a certificate issued by the Centre of Excellence (International Trading).

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must meet the minimum entry requirements of  Engineering and Business programmes, including the following minimum subject requirements:

  • H2 Level pass in Mathematics or equivalent, and
  • H2 Level pass in Biology/Chemistry/Computing/Physics1 or equivalent, and
  • H1 Level pass in Physics2 or equivalent, and
  • H1 Level pass in General Paper/Knowledge & Inquiry or ‘O’ Level pass in English.3


Notes:

  1. Candidates applying for Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering with a Second Major in Business must have a H2 Level pass in Chemistry. Candidates applying for Materials Engineering with a Second Major in Business must have a H2 Level pass in Biology/Chemistry/Physics.
  2. H1 Level pass in Physics is only applicable to candidates who have not read Physics at H2 Level.
   
   
  

TUITION FEES AND SCHOLARSHIPS

The tuition fees for the Bachelor of Engineering with a Second Major in Business programme will be pegged to the fees for the Bachelor of Engineering programmes. Eligible students may also be considered for scholarships that include fully-paid subsidised tuition fees and living allowances. Scholarship terms and conditions apply. ACCREDITATION

All Bachelor of Engineering programmes at NTU College of Engineering are accredited by The Institution of Engineers Singapore, the Singapore signatory of the Washington Accord​, through its Engineering Accreditation Board. The Washington Accord is an international agreement for mutual recognition of the substantial equivalence of engineering academic programmes in satisfying the academic requirements for the practice of engineering at the professional level.

The Nanyang Business School is the first business school in Singapore, and the third in Asia, to be accredited by both the European Quality Improvement System and Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. NBS is also one of only nine business schools outside of the US to be accredited with the AACSB in Accounting. These are the most widely recognised quality assurance standards for accounting and business education, and they assure that degrees NBS confers are recognised around the world.
